Match abandoned because of rain

Scotland’s one-day international against Afghanistan was abandoned after the visitors hit 283-4 before play was ended by rain.

Rahmat Shah scored a fluent unbeaten century while Najibullah Zadran starred with a 53-ball 89 but incessant rain forced the abandonment of the first One-Day International between Scotland and Afghanistan in Edinburgh.

Scotland won the toss and opted to bowl first. Afghanistan lost two wickets in the first 10 overs. Noor Ali Zadran (1) failed to get going while Mohammad Shahzad (26) fell after a brisk start.

A 53-run stand between Javed Ahmadi (39) and Shah (100 not out) resurrected Afghanistan’s innings.

However, Scotland built pressure with dot balls and it resulted in the wicket of Ahmadi, who was castled by Safyaan Sharif (1-50). At the halfway mark, Afghanistan were 102 for three.

Asghar Stanikzai (20) got off to a start as well but he perished in the 31st over. Shah completed his maiden fifty in the 35th over and was given a reprieve in the 39th.

Soon after the 50-run stand between Shah and Najibullah (89 not out) came up, the rain came down stopping the play for more than 90 minutes.

After the resumption, both Shah and Najibullah shifted gears quickly and scored at a brisk pace. Najibullah was the aggressor as he dealt in boundaries and brought up a quick fire fifty.

However, just as Shah completed his maiden ODI hundred in the 48th over, the rain came down once again and this time it was a heavy downpour.

The intensity of the rain forced the umpires to abandon the match after a delay of more than an hour. In the 47.2 overs that were possible, Afghanistan scored 283 for four.
