A curfew has been announced in the Ukrainian capital Kiev and is set to last until Monday morning. It comes as Kiev prepares for a new Russian offensive.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko says anyone seen on the streets would be considered “destructive” by Russia.
Authorities in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, say troops have thwarted a Russian attack. But a residential area in the town of Okhtirak has come under heavy attack.
Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelinsky has said in a recent video that the country’s military has thwarted Russia’s plan to arrest him and replace him with another leader.
He also called on the Russian people to put pressure on Putin to end the war.
“We have thwarted Russia’s plan to appoint a new leader,” Mr Zelensky said.
He said Ukrainian forces had taken control of key cities around Kiev.
