US President Joe Biden has spoken by telephone with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalinsky and assured him of US support.
The White House wrote in a statement on Sunday, February 13, quoting Mr Biden that it had been made clear to the Ukrainian president that “the United States will stand firm with our allies and partners against any Russian aggression against Ukraine.” And respond quickly.”
President Biden reaffirms US commitment to Ukraine’s national sovereignty and sovereignty, while Western officials fear Russian President Vladimir Putin may invade his neighbor this week and possibly Wednesday.
The US president has not sent US troops to fight the Russians in support of Ukraine’s troops, but the United States has warned of “serious and swift” economic sanctions in response to Russia’s move.
Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan said in an interview with CNN that the United States could not predict whether Russia would invade Ukraine this week or the end of winter olympics games in China.
But Mr Sullivan said there is a “clear possibility” of a major military action.
The top US official also said Moscow has stepped up its military presence along the border with Ukraine in recent days.
A day before his talks with Ukrainian President Nicolas Sarkozy, Biden also spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that the invasion of Ukraine would lead to a “widespread humanitarian catastrophe.”
Mr Biden also told Putin that the United States and its allies are committed to diplomacy to end the crisis, but also said that they are equally prepared for other scenarios.
Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops along its border with Ukraine, and the West believes it is part of a plan to take military action against Ukraine.
But Russia says it has no plans to invade Ukraine and has asked NATO not to recognize the country as a member of the alliance and has suggested to the United States that it not establish military bases in the former Soviet Union. The United States and NATO have formally rejected the offer.
