Taand (Wednesday, September 23) — Pakistan’s Geo News television, citing security sources, reported that Pakistani security forces on Wednesday shot down eight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that had entered Pakistani airspace from Afghanistan.
Earlier, Dawn newspaper, citing security sources, reported that on September 23, security forces had used electronic equipment to bring down two simply constructed drones allegedly sent by the Afghan Taliban, about seven kilometers from the city of Kohat.
Geo News, citing Pakistani military sources, said that four drones were shot down near Torkham, while another four crashed in mountainous areas near Kohat.
However, in its latest report, Dawn said, citing security sources, that all eight Afghan drones were shot down in areas around Kohat and near Torkham.
Pakistani security sources described the incident as a clear indication of Afghanistan’s support for armed groups opposed to Pakistan. However, they did not mention that two days earlier, Pakistani aircraft carried out airstrikes in Paktika and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan, killing at least three civilians and destroying several homes.
Pakistani security sources also claimed on Wednesday that they had prevented members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from crossing into Pakistan from Afghanistan through the Kurram area last night.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense has so far made no comment on Pakistan’s latest claims.
