Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in clashes with Russian forces since the Russian invasion of the country. Meanwhile, Western military sources estimate that at least eight Russian troops have been killed so far in the conflict.

Volodymyr Zelensky also called for a ceasefire between the two countries for peace talks with Russia. Mr. Zelensky said diplomats were working on a possible agenda for talks between Ukraine and Russia.

He said he wanted to talk to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and had discussed the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. It comes as Russian forces intensify fighting around the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. A large convoy of Russian troops appears to be slowly approaching the city.
Heavy fighting has been reported northwest of the capital. Attacks have also been warned in other Ukrainian cities. At the same time, the Polish border guards say more than 1.6 million people have fled to Poland since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Makik Dozczyk, deputy director of research at the University of Warsaw, estimates that around one million refugees remain in Poland and others have moved to different countries.
