Afghan teenager Mohammad Taha Eshaqi has written a new chapter in Afghanistan’s sports history by winning the country’s first-ever gold medal at the Asian Junior and Youth Wushu Championships held in Shanghai, China.
Eshaqi earned the gold in the Taolu – Tai Chi Jian category, delivering a flawless performance that outshone elite competitors from across Asia and left both judges and spectators in awe.
Earlier in the tournament, Eshaqi also claimed a silver medal in the Tai Chi Quan event, solidifying his reputation as one of Afghanistan’s most promising young athletes.
In the Sanda (combat) division, Ahmad Nawid Akbari contributed to Afghanistan’s success by winning a bronze medal in the 52kg weight class after defeating an opponent from Turkmenistan.
Afghanistan’s Wushu team, consisting of five athletes and two federation officials, competed in both Taolu (form) and Sanda (combat) categories during the week-long championship from July 23 to July 30.
With a final medal tally of one gold, one silver, and one bronze, Afghanistan achieved an unprecedented milestone in Asian Wushu competition — a moment of national pride and international recognition.
Eshaqi’s historic victory not only marks personal glory but also ignites hope for a new generation of Afghan athletes, inspiring them to aim higher and dream bigger.
