Explosion rocks mosque during Taliban gathering in Faizabad, casualties reported
An explosion occurred today at a mosque in Faizabad city, Badakhshan, where the Taliban had gathered for a Fatiha ceremony. The ceremony was being held in memory of the deceased vice governor of Badakhshan, Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi. Moazuddin Ahmadi, head of information and culture of the Taliban government in Badakhshan, confirmed the incident but was unaware of the exact number of casualties.
A Taliban source, speaking anonymously, informed that Safiullah Samim, the former police commander of the Taliban government in Baghlan, and several others were among those killed in the explosion. Numerous Taliban officials were present at the Fatiha ceremony.
The mosque was engulfed in smoke and flames following the blast. This incident comes after the deputy governor of Badakhshan and his driver were killed in a car bomb explosion on Saturday.
