UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the Taliban government’s announcement to open schools for girls and boys.
Taliban education ministry spokesman Aziz Ahmad Ryan told Reuters on Thursday that all schools would be open to boys and girls next solar year.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Taliban’s announcement on Friday, March 18, stressing that it must be ratified and implemented.
He added: “I welcome the plan announced by the Taliban to reopen schools for boys and girls on March 8, which must now be approved and implemented.”
Mr Guterres emphasized the need to focus on education, and said that it was even more important now with the crisis over time.
A spokesman for the Taliban’s education ministry told Reuters news agency that the girls ‘and boys’ classes would be separate and that girls would be taught only by female teachers, but added that in some parts of the country without teachers Older men will be allowed to teach girls.
“No school will be closed this year and if any school is closed, it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education to reopen it,” he said.
The Taliban came to power in August last year, and despite more than seven months in power, their government has not yet been recognized by any country or international body.
Allowing girls and women to attend school and university is a key demand of the international community from the Taliban.
The Taliban are announcing the opening of schools for boys and girls at a time when the United Nations has recently approved a resolution calling for a formal end to its mission in Afghanistan and its engagement with the country.
