The European Union (EU) has pledged 50 million euros (around 57 million dolors) to help improve the situation of Afghan teachers. The announcement was made during a meeting between UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Deborah Lyons and Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Kabir.
The 50 million euros will be provided by UNICEF to teachers in Afghanistan’s public schools. The aid is part of 300 million euros pledge by the European Union to help people in need in Afghanistan, and to spend it on various health and education projects.
The European Union (EU) said in a statement that during the two months of winter, each teacher would be paid 90 euros a month, and UNICEF would implement a food distribution program to encourage girls and boys education.
The statement specifically mentioned girls’ education and said that families who send their daughters to school also receive cash assistance.
UNAMA chief Deborah Lines praised the Taliban’s decision to reopen universities and start all girls’ schools in the spring.
