The first train carrying Turkish humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan arrived in Herat province of Afghanistan yesterday.
The Turkish embassy in Kabul wrote on its Twitter account on Tuesday that Turkish Ambassador to Kabul Jihad Argin had handed over the humanitarian aid package to Taliban officials at the port of Torghundi.
The humanitarian aid includes 750 tons of food and non-food items provided by the Turkish Red Cross and handed over to the Afghan Red Cross.
The Turkish embassy in Kabul also said that the country would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, adding that humanitarian aid would be send to Afghanistan in the coming weeks.
Taliban government in Kabul welcomed the Turkish Red Cross’ assistance to the Afghan people and called on the country to continue its assistance to the Afghan people.
Following the government change in Afghanistan, the country faced a serious humanitarian crisis and United Nations had earlier warned that the people of Afghanistan would face widespread famine with the onset of winter. According to UN, if humanitarian aid is not provided to the country, 97 percent of Afghanistan’s population will be affected by the current situation.
Turkish officials have previously announced humanitarian assistance to those in need in Afghanistan.
Last week, China announced the departure of two trains carrying humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. The Chinese ambassador to Kabul, Wang Yu, said the last train carrying humanitarian aid to Afghanistan included 730 tonnes of wheat.
Debra Lyons, the head of the United Nations’ political mission in Afghanistan, said at the Taliban’s first conference on Afghanistan’s economic problems at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday that humanitarian aid could not be a long-term solution and stressed that the country’s economic crisis must end.
