Abu Ibrahim al-Qureshi was an Iraqi jihadist whose real name was Amir Muhammad al-Mulla. The Islamic State group has confirmed the death of its former leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Qureshi, and announced the name of a new leader.
Abul Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi has been announced as the new “caliph” in a voice message posted on the Internet, but no details have been released about his identity.
The statement did not say where or when Abu Ibrahim al-Qureshi was killed.
Earlier, on February 3, the United States said the Iraqi jihadist had killed himself and his family in a bomb blast during a raid by US special forces in northwestern Syria.
US President Joe Biden said at the time, “The world’s greatest threat to terrorism has been eliminated. ”
Mr. Biden also claimed that the man had been involved in ISIS-linked activities in various parts of the world and was a “leader” in the Yazidi massacre.
ISIL’s new spokesman, Abu Omar al-Muhajir, said in a statement on Thursday that his predecessor, Abu Hamza al-Qureshi, had recently died.
Al-Muhajir said he could not reveal the full name of the new leader, but called on his supporters to remain loyal to him.
Many believe that an Iraqi man named Bashar al-Khattab Ghazal al-Sumaidi, also known as Abu Khattab, al-Iraqi, Haji Zayed, and Ustad Zayed, was seen as a replacement for the slain ISIS leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Qureshi.
ISIS once controlled about 88,000 square kilometers of territory from eastern Iraq to western Syria and imposed its extremist policies on nearly eight million people.
