German Foreign Minister Analina Byrbok says the international community will not accept Russia’s violations of international law and that Moscow is isolating itself with its latest actions in Ukraine.
Speaking at a joint news conference with her French counterpart Analina Bayerbock, she said it is important that the package of sanctions against Russia be coordinated with German partners as soon as possible to determine Russia’s role. Not acceptable.
But she also said the West is keen to talk to Russia: “Even in the event of a crisis escalating, we must leave the door open for talks. We must work together to prevent war.”
In other news, Germany has halted work on a gas pipeline project from Russia through the North Sea.
An EU diplomat has said that the first round of EU sanctions on Russia will begin on Wednesday.
Biden said the new sanctions are more severe than those imposed on Moscow since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. He says the West will increase its pressure if Russia increases its pressure.
