Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure says he has reopened the country’s airspace, but acknowledges that about six airlines have made changes to their flight schedules to Ukraine.
Oleksandr Kobrakov made the remarks at a time when tensions with Russia over its border have escalated. He described the cancellation of flights to Ukraine by some airlines as follows:
“The reason for the cancellation of flights by some foreign airlines is the increase in information due to the situation rather than the safety of the flights,” he said.
He says the country is working to fill the void left by canceled flights and that the Ukrainian national airline has started selling extra flights to Munich and Geneva.
A number of European airlines have canceled or canceled flights to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, due to security concerns.
On Monday, Germany’s Lufthansa Airlines said it was suspending flights to Ukraine, a move previously announced by Dutch KLM.
Meanwhile, French aviation said it was suspending flights to Kiev after Tuesday, but said it was a precautionary measure and would continue to monitor the situation.
