Former Afghan Minister of Peace Abdul Salam Rahimi has returned to Afghanistan.
Afghan National Television has published a video report about him, in which Mr. Rahimi appears to be meeting with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi.
Mr Mottaqi said he welcomed Rahimi’s return to Afghanistan and hoped that all Afghans who had gone abroad would return.
The Taliban’s foreign ministry said in a Twitter message that senior members of their government had welcomed Mr Rahimi’s return to the country.
“His love for the country has led him to return to the country,” Rahimi was quoted as saying in a report on Afghan National Television.”
Late last year, the Taliban disbanded the Ministry of Peace, led by Abdul Salam Rahimi, including the Ministry of State for Parliamentary Affairs.
The Taliban disbanded the Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) as well as the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) in late December.
The High Peace Council (HPC) was set up by the previous government under the leadership of Abdul Salam Rahimi to oversee peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
