Sanaullah Ghafari, known as Shahab al-Muhajir, a designated global terrorist, has been killed in Kunar, Afghanistan, according to authorities. His death is a significant victory in the fight against terrorism, as Ghafari was wanted not only in Pakistan but also internationally.
Ghafari received his religious education at the renowned Ghaffari Madrasa in Afghanistan after his family migrated from India. He became radicalized during his time at the madrasa, although details about his early life remain scarce.
He was involved in numerous attacks in Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. By April 2020, he became the leader of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) operating in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, leading the group in carrying out deadly attacks on civilians and security forces.
In December 2021, he was designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations and the European Union. A reward of up to $10 million was offered for information leading to his location or identification.
While rumors circulated about his affiliation with al-Qaeda or the Haqqani network, Ghafari orchestrated and led multiple attacks in Pakistan and other locations worldwide. Notable attacks include the assault on the Pakistan Embassy in Kabul and the suicide bombing at Imam Bargah in Qissa Khwani Bazar, Peshawar.
