Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released today that Afghan asylum seekers deported from Greece to Turkey have been looted and beaten along the way. Human Rights Watch interviewed 26 Afghan asylum seekers who were deported to Turkey by Greek forces between September 2021 and February 2022. The group criticized Greek forces for stealing money, equipment and mobile phones from Afghan asylum seekers on the Greek-Turkish border. According to the report, a group of Afghan asylum seekers, followed by police, who were apparently recruited by the police, were transported to Turkey in small boats across the Everest River. Greek officials have not commented.
It should be noted that millions of Afghans are migrating to Europe day and night, with occasional reports of torture and hardship in the media.
