As the new school year approaches in Afghanistan, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on parents to provide all eligible children with the opportunity to start school.
The new academic year in Afghanistan is scheduled to start on the 3rd of January, the new solar year 1401.
UNICEF wrote on its Twitter page on Monday, March 23, which coincides with the first day of the month:
“Before the start of the new school year, which coincides with the 23rd of March this year, UNICEF sincerely wishes all parents across Afghanistan to ensure that all school-age children receive a new education.” Get ready for the start of the year. ”
This is despite the fact that more than seven months after the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan, girls’ schools above the sixth grade have been closed to girls.
But Aziz Ahmad Ryan, a spokesman for the Taliban’s education ministry, told Reuters on Thursday that all schools would be open to boys and girls next solar year.
“No school will be closed this year and if any school is closed, it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education to reopen it,” he said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the Taliban’s announcement that it will open schools for girls and boys.
Antonio Guterres welcomed the Taliban’s announcement last Friday, March 18, and stressed that it must be approved and implemented.
The Taliban came to power in August last year, and despite more than six months in power, their government has not yet been recognized by any country or international body.
Allowing girls and women to attend school and university is a key demand of the international community from the Taliban.
