Tom West, the US special envoy to Afghanistan, says the United States is talking honestly and sincerely with the Taliban.
In his long speech on the sixth anniversary of the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, Mr West emphasized that the United States would not recognize the Taliban unless it changed its attitude.
Mr West said the United States did not support any resistance group against the Taliban and called on other countries in the region to take a similar stance.
The US special envoy to Afghanistan has said that the United States is not seeking to overthrow the Taliban regime and expects them to all inclusive their government.
Mr West also offered some reasons to justify President Biden’s recent ruling on Afghanistan’s frozen currency.
“America’s goals in Afghanistan are the same as they were ten years ago,” West said in a speech at the American Institute of Peace.
He said the United States wants a peace-loving state in Afghanistan that would never be a haven for terrorists who are threatened by the United States and its allies, a state that protects the rights of all, including women and girls.
The US envoy called the Taliban’s remarks “white.” He described the meeting with all Taliban leaders as relatively useful and genuine.
But he said that now America’s priority in Afghanistan is to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
He stressed that the United States and its allies must act immediately.
