The leaders of G20 are expected to hold an extraordinary summit on Afghanistan today Tuesday, to discuss the humanitarian and economic situation of the country after takeover of the Taliban group.
The summit will be mostly virtual and hosted by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Mr. Draghi whose country holds the rotating G20 presidency, has been pushing to widen the global discussion on Afghanistan to countries including Russia and China who had been hosts for Taliban meetings before takeover.
It comes as Afghanistan’s economy situation is soaring and U.N Secretary General, António Guterres warned, the economy of Afghanistan is breaking down.
He tweeted today, “Banks are closing and essential services, such as healthcare, have been suspended in many places.”
Many governments and other organizations heads were invited to the summit of G20, that will be held behind closed doors, which is the first after Taliban takeover and it’s not clear of all will be participating.
The asset freezing, cutting of the international aids caused economic uncertainty and the price for foods rising day by day.
