Indian aid worker kidnapped in Kabul is free

Indian Abducted

An Indian charity worker kidnapped in Kabul last month has been released, a top government official said Saturday.

India External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted that Judith D’Souza was free. She added that D’Souza was expected to be back in India by the evening.

“I am happy to inform you that Judith D’Souza has been rescued,” Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

Judith D’ Souza, who works for an NGO – the Aga Khan Network – as a senior technical advisor, was seized by gunmen on June 9 in the Qala-e-Fatullah area of Kabul while she was returning home after dinner at a friend’s place.

The 40-year-old worker was hired by the Aga Khan Foundation, which provides education and health assistance in about 30 countries. She was abducted June 9.
