The Ministry of Disaster Management says 85 people have been killed and 75 others injured in various natural disasters in Afghanistan this winter. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says more than 53,000 Afghans have been affected by natural disasters in the past year. According to Mullah Janan, director of emergency operations at the Ministry of Disaster Management, 75 people have been injured in the quake and snowfall this winter. He further added that “two to three thousand households have been completely or somewhat damaged.”
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a recent report on natural disasters in Afghanistan released last week that from January 26 last year to January 2022 As of 17th, 53126 people have been affected by natural disasters in Afghanistan.
Natural disasters have occurred in 15 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces during this period, according to Ocha.
The United Nations says earthquakes, avalanches, floods and droughts occur in Afghanistan every year, with an average of 20,000 people affected by natural disasters each year. Natural disasters have also forced some people to flee their homes.
According to the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations, there are currently around three million displaced people in Afghanistan living far from their homes, with a large number of them being affected by natural disasters, in addition to war. They have been forced to flee their homes due to the drought.
Most IDP families live in very difficult conditions. The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations says it has provided assistance to three million displaced Afghans this winter with the support of international aid agencies.
Mullah Janan, director of emergency operations at the Ministry of Disaster Management, said the ministry had also provided assistance to about 40,000 families affected by the disaster.
The statement came as the Afghan National Meteorological Agency (AMA) forecast snow and rain in 27 provinces on Sunday.
The Meteorological Agency said heavy rains could cause floods in some parts of the country. According to the agency, snow and rain are expected in some parts of the country in the coming days.
Floods occur in Afghanistan every spring and early autumn, damaging people’s homes as well as their crops.
