10 foreign tourists killed in attack in Herat

taandcom August 4, 2016
Herat

At least six foreign tourists and their driver have been wounded in Afghanistan in an attack by gunmen on their convoy as it passed through western Herat province, government officials said.

The group of at least a dozen travellers included eight British citizens, three Americans, and one German, but the nationalities of the casualties was not clear, said Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for Herat’s governor.

The group was travelling in a minibus with an Afghan army escort vehicle on a rural highway in Herat Province when they came under Taliban attack with gunfire and rockets.

He said security forces had been dispatched to the scene.

The governor said that the buses were travelling from central Bamyan province to Herat province, with Herat city as its capital, 640 km west of Kabul.

“Several travelers were rescued by security forces shortly after the incident. And an investigation was launched into the attack,” Khadimi added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
