A senior Afghan official said that Kabul, New Delhi and Tehran are to finalize a deal on development of Iran’s Chabahar port soon.
Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Karzai, who was in New Delhi to attend the ‘Heart of Asia’ conference further said that the signing of the agreement would be an important step towards promoting trade and investment and act as a connection point, IRNA reported.
On April 13, Afghanistan’s foreign minister announced that the text of an agreement on Chabahar Port was finalized in the second technical conference held in New Delhi.
In a press statement, Salahuddin Rabbani announced that the text of the trilateral agreement on creating an international transportation and transit passage was finalized and ready to sign at Indian Foreign Ministry.
Chabahar is a free port on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. It is situated on the Makran Coast of the Sistan-Baluchestan Province and is officially designated as a free trade and industrial zone by Iranian government. In view of its free trade zone status, its significance in international trade has increased.
