The United Nations on Thursday announced\u00a0 4.4 billion in aid to millions of Afghans at the International Conference on Fundraising for Afghanistan. This is considered to be the biggest help. The United Nations says it is seeking food, shelter, health care, and other necessities for Afghans. Afghanistan’s 24 million people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance, and the United Nations calls Afghanistan one of the worst crises in the world.
\nMartin Griffith, the UN’s humanitarian and emergency relief coordinator, spent several days in Kabul. He said the lives of millions of people were in danger. He said he also visited a children’s hospital in Kabul where he saw many newborns.
\nSince August 2021, when the United States and NATO withdrew from Afghanistan and the Islamic Emirate came to power, international aid to the country was cut off and the United Nations called for urgent humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. The United Nations says the situation in Afghanistan is dire, people are unemployed and borrowing from others to survive. In addition, Afghanistan is facing a drought this year that is unprecedented in the last three decades.
\nQatar is hosting an international conference on fundraising for Afghans and, more recently, has been instrumental in coordinating humanitarian and political affairs with Afghanistan.
\nMajid Mohammed al-Ansari, an adviser to the Qatari prime minister, said they condemned the Taliban’s decision on girls’ schools and hoped they would reconsider their decision.
\n“We emphasize that this decision affects the human rights of Afghans and the Afghan economy,” he said. “We have also emphasized the need to talk to the Taliban government and make it clear that this decision is unacceptable and should be resolved as soon as possible.”
