The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has been extended for another year. With the exception of Russia, all members of the Security Council have voted in favor of extending the mission in Afghanistan.
\nThe United Nations says UNAMA’s mission in Afghanistan is “critical” to the country’s security. The UN resolution emphasizes the delivery of aid, the formation of a coalition government, and long-term peace and stability.
\nThe resolution expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and said the United Nations would continue to provide assistance to the people of that country. Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has welcomed the extension of UNAMA’s mission. The mission said in a statement that it supported UNAMA’s priorities for the mission. Russia’s envoy to the United Nations, meanwhile, said after the vote that he had abstained from voting on UNAMA’s mandate for a number of reasons.
